This project came to fruition, because out of all of the materials and fabrication methods, 3D printing is cheap per a part, fast – time to model, and easy to use. Wood carving, Metal fabrication, and many others are either very expensive or timing consuming to produce rapid prototyping results.
Why build a printer instead of buying one?
Features… many features of the XenoCube printer were not available at the time, such as a larger print volume, auto – bed leveling, host/client in one machine, print just about any material.
Why host a website?
When an older 3D printer was built, there were a couple of end user experiences that could be improved upon, one of them being the size, heating up your office, always having to make sure that the print bed was paper level, and having a host setup separately from the printer. Looking at the market, these features were on some but nothing all together. During the build of the XenoCube, there was interest from others on this project and since the project is a by product for another project, sharing seems very inline with the 3D printing community. Hopefully, adding a website will provide more simplicity to 3D printing.
